Frequently asked questions
What are sunscreens?
Sunscreens are products that help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet light or UV, blue light or HEV, and Infrared or IR radiation from damaging the skin.
How do sunscreens work?
Sunscreens, topically applied, absorb or reflect harmful blue light and ultraviolet and infrared radiation. This helps protect the skin against sunburn, premature aging, the formulation of dark spots, and the risk of skin cancer.
UVA versus UVB rays—what’s the difference?
There are two types of ultraviolet radiation—UVA and UVB. The difference is in the wavelengths: UVA, long wave ultraviolet A, penetrates deep into the dermis, the skin’s thickest layer. UVB, short wave ultraviolet B, causes harm to the superficial layers of the skin.
What are the risks associated with UVA and UVB?
UVA causes skin damage including dark spots, premature aging and photo-aging or skin wrinkling. It also suppresses the immune system. UVB is the culprit behind sunburn and the risk of skin cancer.
What is blue light? Why is it important to protect skin from blue light?
Blue light—also known as High Energy Visible Light or HEV—is a short wavelength that produces high amounts of energy ranging from 380 to 500 nanometres. It is scientifically proven that blue light causes skin damage including the cause of dark spot, inflammation, photo-aging—skin wrinkling and sagging—and it induces oxidative stress and weakens the skin’s surface.
Blue light penetrates deeper into the skin compared with UVA and UVB. Some studies also suggest that blue light induces skin pigmentation more than UVA and is the major culprit for the cause of dark spots.
Beyond Sun Protection is proven in a study conducted at Singapore National Skin Centre (Study on Melasma, National Skin Centre, Singapore, October 2013 to May 2014), with a protection score rating of 54.1% from Blue Light.
What does SPF mean?
SPF is short for Sun Protection Factor and specifically indicates protection against the UVB rays that cause sunburn.
For example, if your skin normally burns after 10 minutes under the hot sun without protection, an SPF 50 sunscreen would provide 50 times the protection versus bare skin. This means 500 minutes of sun exposure before you start to burn.
Beyond Sun Protection has a score rating of SPF 79.7.
